Bus-train crash: Lagos to prosecute driver for manslaughter

The Lagos state government plans to charge Oluwaseun Osinbajo, the employee bus driver involved in the collision with the train, with manslaughter.

The crash occurred at his PWD railroad crossing in Ikeja, the state capital, on March 9.

A bus carrying provincial government officials was pulled over by a train and eventually stopped in the Sogunle district of the province.

Six people were killed and 96 injured in the incident, and he was taken to a state hospital.

Osibanjo was quickly arrested and handed over to the police for possible investigation and state prosecution. At the end of the investigation, the findings were forwarded to the public prosecutor for further legislative action, according to a statement from the public relations director of the Lagos Ministry of Justice.

“Following receipt and review of the case files by the DPP, a prima facie case of manslaughter and aggravated assault against a staff bus driver has emerged. He has been charged with dangerous bodily harm, both offenses in violation of Sections 224 and 245 of the Lagos State Penal Code 2015.

"The DPP office will immediately file a complaint against the driver. However, his arraignment before the Lagos State High Court is to be postponed until he is fully fit to stand trial due to his serious injuries in the accident.
