Gunmen kidnap Zamfara INEC official with election results

Suspected gunmen kidnapped Bashir Shagari, a returning official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in charge of the Maradun local government area of ​​Zamfara province, on Monday.



According to one source, Shagari had come to his INEC comparison center in Gusau to deliver the results of the gubernatorial election for the Maradun local government when he was kidnapped on the street.


He was with other INEC employees when they were approached on a bridge near the town of Maradun and taken to an unknown location.


INEC State Public Affairs Officer Muktari Janyau confirmed the incident and said the matter had been reported to police headquarters.


Janyau said:


At the time the report was filed, the State Police Command spokesperson, Mohamed Shev, could not be reached. Nine out of 14 local government results have now been announced, with the opposition PDP leading the seven declared so far.
