On Wednesday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo held a birthday celebration at the North East Children's Trust and the Learning Center in Borno State to mark his 66th year of life.
Osinbajo celebrates his 66th birthday in Borno with the restored northeast "Insurgency Orphans," who call him daddy, according to a statement signed late on Wednesday by Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande. The North East Children's Trust is a private sector-led charity and social engineering initiative that was established in 2017 with the goal of nurturing, renewing, and empowering vulnerable children between the ages of 5 and 18 who have lost both parents due to the insurgency in North-East Nigeria.
686 orphaned and vulnerable children have received total support from the NECT in the form of housing, food, a top-notch education, and therapeutic psychosocial support.
In 2016, he oversaw the initiatives that led to the creation of the North East Children's Trust and the Learning Center.
Osinbajo headed to Borno with his wife, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, after holding a quiet morning devotional at his Aguda House residence in the Presidential Villa.
He was welcomed by the governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, along with other senior government officials, when he arrived at the Nigeria Air Force Base in Maiduguri. Babagana Zulum was accompanied by his wife, Falmata Zulum.
He then went to the NECT Learning Center, where there was a schedule of events for the school's students to celebrate the day.
Regardless of the current socioeconomic circumstances, Osinbajo assured the staff and students of the institution that he was committed to continuing to provide top-notch facilities that would help them stand out among their peers.
"God giving me good health and preserving my life, I will make sure that you receive the best, all of you children who are here, is one thing that is very certain.
"Whatever the case may be, we will make every effort to ensure that you receive the best care possible because that was our initial commitment and promise.
"My wife and I consider the students of this school to be our own children; we want to provide them with the kind of education that our own children have had, which is why everything that is done here is done to the best standards available anywhere in the world," the Vice President said.
In his remarks, Governor Zulum thanked the Vice President for his firm commitment to the education and plight of the vulnerable. Governor Zulum was present at the school through the Secretary to the State Government, Usman Jidda.
Jidda claimed that the founding of the school demonstrates the VP's goodness and concern for the underprivileged in society.
In a similar vein, the commissioner of education, Abba Wakilbe, stated that Osinbajo will always be remembered by the people of Borno State as the first leader to address the educational needs of the more than 56,000 children left orphaned by the Boko Haram insurgency.
Prof. Hauwa Biu, vice chair of the NECT board, was among those in attendance at the event.
