JUST IN: Buhari arrives in Qatar for UN conference

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret. ), arrived in Doha, Qatar's capital, on Saturday night for his fourth international trip in 2023. He was there to attend the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries.

This is based on information obtained from Bashir Ahmad, the President's Special Advisor on Digital Communications.

Buhari's visit is at the request of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, according to a previous statement made on Saturday and signed by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu. President Buhari attends UN conference on least developed countries in Qatar, according to the press release. Shehu claims that between March 5 and March 9, 2023, Buhari and his counterparts from around the globe will meet in Qatar to discuss the theme "From Potential to Prosperity."

The journey occurs six months after the Qatari government rejected a previous visit scheduled for September 11 and 12, 2022, on the grounds that "the proposed dates were not suitable." The proposed dates were not convenient for Al Thani, according to a letter sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Qatari embassy in Nigeria. As a result, it requested additional dates for the first quarter of 2023. The Gulf Nation was completing its World Cup preparations at the time.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Regions Department) was congratulated by the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Abuja in a verbale dated August 19, 2022, which stated that H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, had accepted an invitation from H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emirati, to visit Qatar on September 11–12, 2022. "Has the honor to communicate that the visit dates proposed are unsuitable and kindly requests that the Nigerian side suggest different dates for the visit during the first quarter of 2023.

"The Embassy of the State of Qatar avails itself of this opportunity to renew the assurance of its highest consideration to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Regions Department)."

The conference, which will be held from March 5–9, 2023, with the theme: From Potential to Prosperity, is a once-every-ten-year opportunity to gain the support of the international community for accelerating sustainable development in the LDCs and helping them move closer to achieving prosperity. Shehu noted. In Doha, Buhari will reaffirm Nigeria's dedication to helping the most vulnerable nations overcome their development challenges while highlighting the ways in which the Nigerian government has helped them in the past in various ways.

The President will vehemently reiterate the need for sustainable solutions for countries facing these serious challenges as the majority of these nations struggle to find answers to issues like poverty, the negative effects of climate change, the food and energy crisis, as well as high debt burden, among others. World leaders, representatives from business, civil society, and youth organizations will all be present at the summit.

As the LDCs struggle to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, the participants will exchange developmental ideas and mobilize political will, solidarity, action, and solutions to transform them. These challenges include poverty, food insecurity, hunger, weak or nonexistent infrastructure, inadequate health facilities, and climate change. The President will travel to Qatar four times in 2023. He has so far traveled to Ethiopia in February, Senegal in late January, and Mauritania in January.
