The Ondo State Police Command said Saturday it had launched an investigation into the cause of death of a woman and her baby in the town of Owo, the headquarters of the state's Owo local government area.
A 29-year-old woman, identified as Tawa, and her husband were determined to have been found unconscious in their room on Friday with their five-month-old baby already dead.
The family is said to have gone to bed safely on Thursday.
Sources say the couple had purchased a new generator a few days ago and it was running before the family went to bed on Thursday night, suggesting smoke from the generator may have been to blame. .
The family was found in critical condition on Friday, sources said. The baby was already dead, but the couple lost consciousness and were taken to the Owo Federal Medical Center, where the woman gave up ghosting.
A source said: "When the deceased sister didn't see her at work on Friday afternoon, she got worried. So she and some colleagues went to her house. When they arrived at her house, they found the door locked and had to force their way in.
"They were shocked to see the couple in a coma even though the baby had already died. So they rushed her to FMC where she was dead and her husband was in critical condition. ”
State Police spokesman Hummirayo Odunrami confirmed the incident but said an investigation was ongoing.
She said: "At this time, we cannot say exactly what caused the incident. Some say it was caused by generator smoke, but an empty sniper bottle was also found in the room. The room may have been previously sprayed with insecticide, but an investigation is ongoing."
