Following the recently concluded presidential election, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak congratulated President-elect Bola Tinubu.
Nigeria and the UK have a long-standing alliance that has endured the latter's more than 62 years of independence from the former.
Salutations to @officialABAT for winning in Nigeria. The connection between the UK and Nigeria is still solid, Sunak tweeted on Wednesday night.
"I look forward to working with you to further our security and commercial relations, creating more economic opportunities and prosperity in both of our nations."
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed Tinubu the victor.
After a tough contest, 70-year-old Tinubu won the most votes on February 25 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 8,794,726, about two million more than his nearest challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Abubakar, 76, who has already campaigned for president six times, received 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who in less than a year galvanized youthful voters in a way that some have called unprecedented, came in second with 6,101,533, received 6,101,533 votes.
