In an effort to balance the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the president-elect Bola Tinubu, Mallam Salihu Lukman, the National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress, has called for the leadership of the ruling party to be relieved of his duties.
In a statement titled "APC Internal Dynamics and the Future of Democracy," Lukman called for the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the party's national chairman, in order to make room for a Christian leader. To appease party supporters in Osun following the disastrous results of both the governorship and presidential elections in the state, the Kaduna politician and activist also demanded the removal of APC National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore.
Recall that two weeks ago, an emotional Lukman pleaded with Tinubu to take the internal reform of the ruling party as one of his top priorities in the news.
But on Friday, the NWC member made it abundantly clear that in order to balance the contentious M-M ticket of Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima, it was necessary to placate Nigerians by removing the national chairman and secretary of the party.
Additionally, he cautioned that the APC must acknowledge that the same religious ticket it offered for the 2023 Presidential election, if not properly managed to produce the desired outcome of inclusivity to broaden governance across all divides, could deepen the rift among Nigerians.
"Now that APC and Asiwaju have won the election, it is critical to show that the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the president-elect and Shettima is just an electoral ploy. Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the party's national chairman, is also a Muslim, so it will be crucial to take all necessary measures to bring about a leadership change for the party and install a new National Chairman who is a Christian. The possibility of keeping the National Chairman in North-Central is one benefit of this.
"It shouldn't be difficult to persuade Sen. Adamu to step down from his position as national chairman in order to open the door for the election of a new APC national chairman who is a Christian. Because Sen. Abubakar Kyari, a Muslim from the North-East, will succeed Sen. Adamu if the current leadership hierarchy is followed, that may require an emergency national convention.
"In addition to replacing the National Chairman, it is important to acknowledge that Sen. Iyiola Omisore's case as the party's National Secretary has grown to be a more contentious issue in Osun State. Unfortunately, Sen. Omisore is more of a dividing factor for the party leadership in Osun State than a unifying one.
There shouldn't be any trouble persuading the senator.Sen. Omisore would need to step down as APC's national secretary and a new, unifying national secretary would need to be chosen in order to save Osun State and restore it to its previous standard of national political reckoning. Sen. Omisore is not the only member of the party's National Working Committee who should be replaced; other members as well, according to him.
The reticent politician continued by saying that Nigerians have come to recognize and accept that the decision to run a Muslim-Muslim ticket was one that the ruling APC and Tinubu had to make as part of their electoral strategy.
He added that they were not particularly surprised that the opposition parties, including the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Labour Party, and Peoples Democratic Party, used it to mobilize Nigerians against the APC throughout the election campaign.
"Given the divisive campaigns supported by opposition parties, particularly around the Muslim-Muslim ticket of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Sen. Kashim Shettima, now President-elect and Vice President-elect, APC needs to show that the politics of uniting Nigerians require unconventional approaches, which go beyond simple recognition of the dominant groups in Nigerian politics, he said. Over time, representation in Nigeria has tended to favor the country's three largest ethnic groups, the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo. Other organizations were reduced to supporting roles.
The key question is whether selecting a Muslim-Muslim ticket with Sen. Shettima as Tinubu's running mate was done so on purpose in an effort to increase the diversity of political representation and participation in the nation. The ability of Asiwaju to bravely make a decision that deviates from conventional politics in order to win the support of citizens must be recognized, even though it may not have been a deliberate plan to increase political participation or representation at first.
