17 deaths confirmed in Kaduna new killings

 



As many as 17 people, including police officers, were killed in attacks and reprisals in the community of Zangong Kataf in southern Kaduna State.
Unrest in the area reportedly began last Thursday when a young nomad was tied to a tree and killed with a machete by locals near Eungwang Juju.
The situation worsened on Saturday afternoon when a Fulani man and a police officer were shot dead at the checkpoint in Nungwang Wakiri after a misunderstanding between security forces and some Fulani men was reported. was done.


Later that night, a group of local youths who were out fishing were reportedly attacked and one of them was beaten to death with a machete by a shepherd who wanted revenge.

A senior military source in the area told The Nation:
“Last Thursday, a Umar Sambo (Shepherd) of Zangon Kataf LGA was killed when he was returning from grazing cattle around Ungwan Juju. “The killer tied up and killed the young shepherd and hid the body in an undisclosed location. When his brother, identified as Safiyanu, could not find him, he reported it to security officials and A search was launched and his body was eventually found in Eungwang."

He said the security situation they were trying to tackle worsened when security forces clashed with some Fulani at the Wakiri checkpoint on Saturday night, killing a Fulani man and a police officer. said.

According to him:
“His Ungwan Wakili village of his Atyap chieftain in Zangon Kataf LGA was attacked by eight of his unidentified people.
40:00 p.m. on Saturday, in apparent retaliation following the aforementioned murder of the shepherd.

“Another suspected cause of Saturday night's attack was the accidental shooting of a pastoralist by police officers at Nungwang Wakiri Junction, setting a nomad's motorbike on fire, and subsequent mob action.”


However, he said that although Operation Safe Haven forces had been mobilized into the village to repel the attack, about 16 to 17 people had already been killed and seven wounded. The injured were taken to Zhongkwa General Hospital for treatment.

Local government officials have imposed a 24-hour curfew on affected communities to prevent further disruption of law and order.
