The horrific collision between a train and a staff bus for the Lagos State BRT in the Shogunle neighborhood of Ikeja, Lagos State, was described as "depressing and extremely sad" by the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), on Thursday.
He also expressed sympathy for the injured and comforted the families of the deceased, wishing them a speedy recovery. "The collision between the train and the BRT staff bus at the level crossing is upsetting and extremely sad. many who were injured," a statement signed by Buhari's spokesman, Garba Shehu, read late Thursday.
"President Buhari reacts to horrific Lagos train/bus accident," reads the statement.
He praised the Federal Government and Lagos State authorities for their quick involvement in relief efforts.
It was reported earlier in the day that a speeding train collided with a state bus carrying civil servants to work.
At least six people were killed and over 82 others were hurt when both vehicles collided at the PWD bus stop in Ikeja.The injured were taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.
Four people died from their injuries at the hospital, while two died at the scene of the accident, according to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who visited the injured patients there.
85 passengers were involved, according to Sanwo-Olu, with 42 sustaining moderate injuries, 29 sustaining serious injuries, and eight sustaining minor injuries. Three months ago, an Abuja-bound passenger train collided fatally with a Toyota Camry sedan, killing its lone occupant, a middle-aged woman identified as Selimota Suleiman, an accountant for the Nigeria Television Authority. Thursday's collision was also fatal.
