The federal government has revealed that more than 12.9 million domestic and international cyberattacks have been registered, with the presidential and parliamentary elections just wrapped up.
Making the announcement, Communications and Digital Economy Minister Professor Isa Pantami said that on election day alone, more than 6.9 million attacks were registered.
He announced that the sophisticated infrastructure had successfully blocked the attack as various government agencies were responsible for protecting the country's cyberspace.
Pantami commended President Muhammad Buhari for providing a favorable environment for government agencies to carry out their duties freely and unhindered.
The minister said in a statement from his media adviser Uwa Suleiman that threat intelligence prior to the presidential election revealed an astronomical increase in cyber threats to Nigeria's cyberspace. Pantami detailed the cyberattack as follows:
“During this time, numerous hacking attempts were recorded, including distributed denial of service (DDoS), email and his IPS attacks, SSH login attempts, brute force injection attempts, path his traversals, detection evasion, and forced browsing. .
“A total of 12,988,978 attacks originating from inside and outside Nigeria were recorded. It is worth noting that the Center successfully blocked these attacks and escalated them to relevant authorities for appropriate action.
“Paranational organizations under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy have played a key role in creating a favorable environment for successful credible, free, fair and transparent elections.”
